Review: Where the Wild Things Are
Posted on October 23, 2009 by paigenoell with 80 views

This film is an adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s story, Where the Wild Things Are. It is a tale of a lonely and imaginative boy, Max, who after turning his back on his family adventures to another world and joins the chaos of a dysfunctional group of misfits. It is a classic tale of how the grass really isn’t greener on the other side and Max comes to find out that his new family is just as torn as his own, if not more. Things are amazing and grand at first but small cracks get larger as Max starts to feel uneasy and un-welcomed in his new world and comes to realize the love he left behind.
While the costumes/animation of this film where astounding and breathtaking, it is missleadingly not a children’s film. With the vintage children’s book coming back to life in film, parents have been excited to share this with their young ones. It seems everywhere you look there are Where the Wild Things Are creature toys and dolls and hipster shirts. Just today I saw an add for Where the Wild Things Are children’s Ugg boots! But to the contrary this is not a movie for children. While the big fuzzy creatures look lovable enough, the content is very adult and lags any lightheartedness, making it hard to keep a child’s attention. Family dysfunction and disloyalty are a core concept in this movie and if you are out to see a cheerful, playful movie I would wait for The Fantastic Mr.Fox.
On the other hand if you are an adult and looking for an introspective and visually stimulating movie, this would be one to see. It is very easy to recognize that this movie was going for the 80’s dark fairytale vibe like the classics Legend, Alice in Wonderland, Labrynth, and The Never Ending Story. While it delivers on being a darker fairytale, it does not leave you walking away with a warm feeling inside. My recommendation would be a different ending, but you will have to decide that one for yourself!
Perhaps ditch the kids and go see Where The Wild Things Are…(then go have ice cream for a pick-me-up!)…or go see one of the many other great movies in theaters now. It’s a booming month for blockbusters…choose wisely.
