Review: The Men Who Stare at Goats

While this story has genuinely funny PARTS, the movie as a whole is lacking much vigor. A reporter played by Ewan McGregor finds dissatisfaction in his life and starts on a quest to be something more, a war reporter. He travels to Iraq to get in the real grime of things. He is very quickly launched into the unbelievable world of the “elite” psychic military headed by Kevin Spacey, George Clooney, and Jeff Bridges. While this bunch of actors had great chemistry and fed off each other very well, the story around them was farfetched and at times uninteresting. It is one of those movies that is taking you somewhere but never really finds that ending. If you could cut half the scenes and splice the rest together you would have a hilarious comedy but all together this movie is trying to be too witty and trying too hard to hit your intellectual funny bone.
One thing I found to be funny about this movie is that it is based on actual government reports! Not surprising that our government would be spending millions on psychic jedi military men..haha.
The bottom line- great actors, great acting, slower story, quirky mix. I’d say most people have a 50/50 chance of liking it. Other movies it is comparable to are The Informant or Burn After Reading, so if you are a fan of off-beat, government conspiracy comedies, this movie may be for you.
